Paris

We are happy to present our Paris travel guide for Local Secrets. Paris feels like a living museum that still runs on everyday rituals, quick coffees, and long walks beside stone façades.

It draws you in for the romance of place, the craft of daily life, and the sense that beauty is part of the routine, all day here.

Most travelers come to Paris to reconnect with culture, taste, and atmosphere, rather than to tick off sights.

Spring, especially April to June, and early fall, September to October, are often the sweetest balance of weather and crowds.

The city averages about 12°C / 54°F across the year, though heat waves and cold snaps can happen.

You will notice a confident, slightly private personality, yet it opens up when you slow down and follow local rhythms.

People visit for art, food, history, and style, but also for small moments that feel personal.

Paris rewards patience, because the best parts are often unplanned.

Know before you go

Paris is France’s capital, and it feels special because each neighborhood has its own rhythm, yet the city stays surprisingly connected.

For comfortable weather and fewer crowds, plan for April to June or September, however winter is charming but darker and often pricier.

Two to three days works for key highlights, a week fits a slower pace. Stay in Le Marais for walkability, or Saint-Germain-des-Prés for a calmer base.

Walk and use the Metro, a car usually adds hassle. Lunch is 12–2, dinner 7:30–10, start with “bonjour.” Budget is mid to high, watch pockets on packed lines, and validate paper tickets to avoid fines.

Top things to do

In Paris, priorities shift fast, couples may chase views and late walks, families need parks and shorter museum stretches, and solo travelers or friends can go deeper by focusing on one neighborhood per day.

With one day, book a timed Louvre entry, plan 2–3 hours, about €22, arrive at opening to dodge lines, then take Metro Line 1 and walk the Seine for a free, easy reset.

For 2–3 days, add Montmartre early, it’s hilly, so use the funicular for an easier pace, and keep a café stop for bad weather. In summer, carry water for queues, and swap to Sainte-Chapelle on rainy afternoons.

Must try local flavours.

Try jambon-beurre for the essential Paris sandwich, and onion soup when you want something warm, both highlight the city’s love of great bread. For a sit-down meal, steak frites is the bistro benchmark, best at lunch.

For sweet, start with a croissant at breakfast, grab a crêpe mid-afternoon, and finish with a macaron. Pair with a café crème, or choose a kir before dinner, “jus pétillant” is a good non-alcoholic swap.

Order clearly: “Je prendrai un jambon-beurre, s’il vous plaît.” Street bites are €3–€8, bistro mains €15–€30. Ask “sans gluten” or “végétarien,” and tip by rounding up €1–€2.

Authentic, high quality local favourites

In Paris, local favourites are bistros, boulangeries, markets, wine bars, and tiny cafés where residents return. A “local favourite” means regulars and steady quality, not hype.

Good signs include a short chalkboard menu, tables filling at 12:30 and 8:00, and staff who don’t push.

Order one thing done well: plat du jour, charcuterie and cheese, or a seasonal tart. Le Marais suits central walkers, Canal Saint-Martin suits a slower afternoon.

Go early for lunch, reserve weekend dinners. Expect € bakeries, €€ bistros, €€€ tasting menus. Skip places with aggressive greeters or photo menus, and remember many Métro stations have stairs, plan routes if you need step-free access.
