Tips to visit Geneva

Geneva might seem super international, but it’s got its own local personality too. People from here are called Genevans, and while it’s a mix of cultures, there’s a chill local pride you can feel once you settle in.

When greeting someone, it’s common to say “Bonjour” or “Salut”, and among friends, the three-cheek kiss is totally normal. The main language is French, but you’ll hear English, German, and Italian pretty often—it’s a multilingual zone.

Locals usually eat lunch around 12–1 pm and dinner from 7 to 8:30 pm. Most stores and offices run from 9 am to 6:30 pm, and many places close on Sundays—so plan ahead!

Tipping isn’t a must, since it’s included in the bill, but rounding up or leaving 5–10% is appreciated for good service. Healthcare’s top-level and runs on a mandatory insurance system. Dress-wise, it’s stylish but low-key. And if you hear someone say “ouais, ouais,” they’re not annoyed—they’re just being super Swiss.
